SuperGT is what we have in this part of the world that resembles the FIA GT racing series. Mainly based in Japan but it has since for the past years presented rounds outside of land of the rising sun. Malaysia’s Sepang International Circuit (SIC) has been selected for the odd 10 over years (officially sanctioned race started in 2002) and will also be racing in Korea in the 2013 season.

It’s barely a week before the race comes to SIC and various promotional events have started in Kuala Lumpur to rev up the race. The Awesome Powered team are also busy in preparing for our coverage of the SuperGT. This would be the round 3 of the 2012 season and having the cars as well as the much loved SuperGT Race Queens come down to Sepang would be a real treat for the local fans and automotive enthusiasts.

Various events in search of the next SuperGT Race Queens have also been held in downtown Kuala Lumpur recently. You can bet your pants many more of the Race Queens would be present during the weekend, flown direct from Japan itself to keep the boys’ tongues wagging and shutterbugs busy.

The SuperGT presents two categories of racing; the GT500 and GT300, both representing the amount of horsepower (more or less) each car in their respective categories touting the GT500 series as the fastest grand touring race in the world while having the widest variety of cars in the GT300 class. It is interesting to see exotic supercars battling it out with the humble Toyota Prius and Honda CR-Z (although they will be in racing form which is not so humble after all). The GT500 will have the likes of the Honda HSV-10, the Nissan GT-R and the Lexus SC430. There would also be a wild card entry this year, reminiscing the former Lotus RR300 in 2005 which comprises of drivers Fairuz Fauzy and Hiroki Yoshida who will be driving the Mosler MP900.

As with previous events, there will be a motorshow sponsored by AFFIN Bank which covers 8,000 square feet of automotive awesomeness. We will be there to have a look see with our photography rig on tow.

There would be an overload of automotive awesomeness as the race event would also feature the return of the Biggest Super/Performance Car Gathering which was done last year. 405 cars turned out in 2011 and this year the local organizers would be gunning to beat that record.

With racing also comes the party (or parties). This year there will also be an Akihabara Town, which is a gadget and lifestyle themed bazaar that is filled with – you guess it – lifestyle items and the latest electronic gadgets. For those couch racers, the Finals of Sony Playstation’s Gran Turismo 5 Asia Online Tournament will be held at the Akihabara Town as well. Watch the 6 Finalists from all over Asia battle it out on state-of-the-art racing simulators to claim the title of Asia GT5 Champion and make their country proud.

A full weekend of automotive awesomeness, just the way we like it. :)
